I started taking these photographs while travelling around Ukraine in 2013 as visual notes that I could reference later in order to find specific points of a journey on a map. I continued to do this over the following years while living and working in the troubled Donbass regions in the east of the country. Over time I realised that these fleeting moments, taken through the dirty or frozen windows of public transport, offered glimpses into the political instability and conflict occurring in Ukraine, and a narrative began to emerge.

What interested me most was that working in this way stripped all control from me, and the resulting pictures are from the point of view of a civilian, rather than a photojournalist or correspondant.

Presented here is a small selection of these images, and the series itself is an extract from a much larger body of work.
