Granta Magazine 171: Dead Friends

Recent work commissioned for Granta Magazine 171: Dead Friends, to accompany the written piece The Conservation Of Mass: On Resomation by William Atkins. The images show a resomation machine used for an alternative and more environmentally friendly form of ‘cremation’ using water and alkali instead of fire, sometimes referred to as a water cremation. The body is placed in the tank which is filled with the water solution and gently heated, reducing the body to liquid and bone ash. The liquid is returned to the water cycle, and the ashes collected and returned to family or friends of the deceased.
