The Information Front Vol 2

Volume 2 of The Information Front is now out! This volume takes a different format and approach, looking at how photography has helped shaped Ukrainian identity and it’s path to freedom. Featuring four sections, we go back fifty years with photographers such as Boris Mikhailov, Viktor Kochetov and others from the Kharkiv School of photography and then into the collapse of the USSR and into the 90s with Alexander Chekmenev and Valeriy Miliserdov. Next, we look at the Maidan Revolution of Dignity and it’s representation. Chapter 3 is the younger generation of photographers and their break with tradition, emphasizing the body such as work by Elena Subach, Luu is da Bukreyeva, Mila Teashaieva and many more. Lastly, we look at the Russian war since the illegal annexation of Crimea in 2014 up to today, from photojournalism to more artistic approaches. In all, an amazing survey of the richness and power of Ukrainian photography over history and it’s very important role. While it’s often been argued that photography is a colonial weapon, in this case photography reveals and foments change, emancipation, identity and freedom.
